Peter - Welcome to the 'Savage world'. Sounds like you have pretty well analyzed your problem. Go down 11 postings and you will find an excellent article on oil. Essentially it says any good quality oil is OK as long as it is not one of the energy efficient oils which have friction modifiers. They don't work well in wet clutch applications such as in the Savage. The other option that may apply to your bike could be a loose clutch adjustment or worn clutch plates. Since you did not indicate the mileage of your '86' or the condition of your bike or the former riders personal style it would be hard to distinguish but the Savage clutch does seem to take quite a bit of abuse so first thought is adjustment which is easily made by cable housing adjustment. Regarding the idle mixture screw - mine is a '96' but I assume yours is located in the same place, it is up high on the right side of the carb (assuming you are on the bike facing forward). It's behind a brass plug usually coated with a spot of paint/sealant. To get to it you must drill a small hole run in a screw and extract it with a slide hammer. Do not drill to deeply thereby damaging the mixture screw itself. Assuming the condition of your bike is good, sounds like you got a deal!
